Understanding CanLII Search Results

CanLII (Canadian Legal Information Institute) is Canada's free, public database of court decisions and legislation. When you search, you'll see actual court decisions from real Ontario cases. Look for:

  • Similar fact patterns: Cases with marriage length, income levels, or issues like yours
  • Court reasoning: How judges applied the Spousal Support Advisory Guidelines (SSAG)
  • Recent decisions: More recent cases reflect current judicial interpretation
  • Higher courts: Court of Appeal decisions are binding on lower courts
